2. Design and Develop Digital-Age Learning Experiences and Assessments
Description
Technology offers assessment tools that go beyond multiple choice and/or fill in the blank. Teachers can create enriching activities for students in order to manage and assess student learning. This allows teachers to collect individual student data that highlights student strengths and areas of focus; therefore, allowing teachers to personalize student education. This personalization of education is important because students learn differently so their means of showing content comprehension should be different as well.

Reflection
Exploring the benefits of using technology for formal and informal assessments has been a growing process because there are many options available, but discerning which is the best comes through some trial and error. Websites such as Kahoots, Socrative, and Google Forms are available resources for receiving student feedback on content standards. Kahoots and Socrative are more student-centered and interactive, but require a time limit. They are both good resources for informal assessments where the teacher can see where the class is academically from a homework reading assignment, for example. Google Forms is confidential for students and would be beneficial for a formal quiz or test. Google Forms allows the creator All these resources provided immediate feedback for teachers which can improve teaching pedagogy. I have used Kahoots in the classroom and my students were all engaged and asked to use it again! This is a must!
An current educational trend is the use of Project Based Learning. This is where students are given a real-world issue and are asked to troubleshoot a solution given the knowledge they have attained in the course. The benefit of this style of assessment is that teachers can create guidelines, yet students can freely operate in these guidelines. This highlights student strengths and no two projects look identical! I created a Webquest assignment, an example of a PBL assignment, in order to assess student knowledge on animal and plant cells. This project was freeing as a teacher to create because I did not have to think of EVERY detail for students to complete. I simply shared with them the objective and the requirements and they were able to explore and create on their own. PBL is a must use in education because it creates opportunities for students to shine in their diverse learning style.
